An hour later Tommy Blackwood received a phone call he had never expected. It was Constable Horace MacMillan asking a favour. Tommy and the local police had not always seen eye to eye. Tommy was a Blackwood, one of the four original settler families on the island, and they had farmed the island for over a hundred years. He was a pig hunter and as tough as they come, his tattooed arms as hard and knotted as the pohutukawa roots that grip the island cliffs.

“Hello, Tommy, this is Horace.” Tommy Blackwood recognised the policeman’s voice on the phone.

“I thought you were on the Chathams,” said Tommy.

“I am,” said Horace. “I need your help with Achilles.”

“Do you want me to shoot the bastard?” asked Tommy, and it was not an idle offer.

“No, I’m stuck here a thousand kilometres away and half the New Zealand Police are hunting him. I have reason to believe he’s innocent, but I can’t do anything about it until I get back to the Barrier. I want to get Achilles off the island today on the afternoon car ferry.”

“What do you want me to do?” asked Tommy.

“I take it you will be unloading the ferry with your truck,” said Horace.

“As always,” said Tommy, who had a carrier business and met every ferry to unload freight.

“At 1 p.m. you’ll see Big Jim’s boat Moody Blue approaching the wharf,” said Horace. “When she gets close, I need you to create a diversion. Can you do that?”

“Sure,” replied Tommy.

“Thanks, Tommy. Jacqui, Wayne and all the others on the wharf will be in on it. Expect a heavy police presence – lots of police with guns searching everything.”

“No trouble,” said Tommy, “and I’m really sorry about Sheila.”

“Thank you, Tommy,” said Horace and the phone call ended.
